Interests and hobbies

For many years building computer systems has been my main hobby and I am looking forward to a career in computing. I have diverse experience in hardware and software elements and am developing my skills as the technology progresses. I have my own web site (http://andy.elcock.org/) where I share information, programming ideas, useful files and distribute my software. I develop many other web sites in my spare time. The latest is fairly simple, http://www.creelrestaurant.co.uk/. Others, however, include online shopping, web based database management and many multimedia features. In addition I provide computer tuition for individuals of varying abilities and maintain and repair computer systems. At university I am involved with ?Tardis?, a fully-featured network maintained by fellow Computer Science students.

My other great interest is singing and I have participated in many choirs and international festivals. In 1999 I represented Great Britain on the National Youth Choir world tour.  More recently I have performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus in Glasgow. I also play the viola in orchestras and keep fit by playing badminton and cycling.

Programming Languages

I work constantly with many computer languages in the process of web and application development. These include Java (both user applications and server-side using Tomcat), HTML, CSS, XML, PHP, SQL, Javascript, C, Delphi, Perl and Unix Shell Programming. I also use Visual Basic and C++ where needed.

Operating Systems

I have a good knowledge of both Windows and Linux. My preferred operating system is Gentoo GNU/Linux. I currently maintain Windows 2000 and Debian GNU/Linux servers for email, routing, web hosting (Apache and Tomcat), ssh, ftp and related services.
